The first edition was funded on Kickstarter in March of 2015. This was my very first Kickstarter campaign ever. Although I planned out the process very strategically, experience would still prove to be the best teacher. It is now 2016 and its time for the Second Edition. The Blue Orbits have a very deep blue, almost like Lake Tahoe blue. I love how they felt and how they looked. The Blue Orbits have thick borders which I have always loved because I love the retro feel. I received many messages about the deck, some loved the borders, other’s preferred slimmer.
Which brings us to… The Orbit Deck: Second Edition. With every Yin there must be a Yang. Heads and tails. North/South. Hot/Cold. This whole time, the Blue Orbits have been missing it’s brother. The Blood Red Orbits feel bold and deliver a mysterious vibe all while looking sharp and iconic like it’s older sibling. A few things have changed, a few things have remained the same. I have never liked the idea of simply changing the color and nothing else. I think small things should be updated as the Orbit line gets older. After the Reds I will start making bigger changes to the back design. Which means these will probably be the last Orbits to look like this. The future will bring updated colors and updated back designs while keeping the same essence as the original Blue and Red Orbits. Here are the following changes that were made for the Red Orbits.
Slimmer Borders
Right off the bat you’ll notice that the borders are noticeably slimmer and will look sleek while doing pressure fans and spreads. The slimmer borders give a younger feel to the deck itself. Since bold thick borders are retro, slimmer borders point to the future. You’ll notice they won’t be as slim as other new decks out there because I’m retro to the core so it’s tough for me to go ultra slim. I take all of your comments and messages into consideration though. I know this was one of the primary things that was asked for by my supporters and Orbit deck owners around the world. You will not be disappointed. They will be noticeably thinner.
The Color
Just like my decision making process with the dark Blue Orbits, I have decided to make the Red Orbits a very deep blood red. I think the super bright red color attracts too much attention and can be distracting to the eyes. Also brighter red decks turn more pink with age. Deeper darker colors give it a more mysterious and subtle feel and hold their visual strength longer. I think humans have always shared a connection with this color, being that its the color of your blood. We couldn’t survive without it. I place magic on this same level of importance. Magic and cards are my life and have always been important to me. Why wouldn’t your art be the same color as your blood?
The Ace
Since Daniel Schneider (The creator of the Orbit Ostronaut Joker) created such an impression in the deck with his hand drawn talents, I decided he needed to also have a hand in the new Ace as well. The new Ace is the same shape as the original but now on the inside is a snapshot view of the back of the Ostronaut looking at earth from the moon. Obviously this idea blew me away. I loved it. It had detail all while staying simple and minimal just how I like it. To me it represents the next level of evolution. It represents what we should be striving towards. For humans to have walked on the moon with less technology than we have on our phones is a testament to the human spirit. It shows how far we can go. It sets new standards. I couldn’t have thought of a better Ace for the Red Orbit deck. Excellent work by Daniel! I don’t think his affiliation with the Orbit brand will end here. I feel like our saga has only begun and it’s an honor to have him on the team.
Minor Cosmetic Adjustments
I decided to remove a couple small components about the original back design. Trust me, you’ll have to actually look to find the difference but since I’m a perfectionist, I like this new design better. Like I said, you probably won’t see the difference but to me it feels much better. Also, the box will have a different approach to it as well. Small things will be changed and refined. I plan on making the inside of the box the same color as the outside of the box. It will cost me more but it won’t cost you more.
Here is what will stay the same.
Quality
The USPCC provides a quality unlike any other company I have seen so far. It’s the quality all of us have grown to love. I’m not talking down to any other card company out there but the USPCC is the most expensive for a reason. If I wanted to make more money for myself I’d choose a different company but honestly you guys deserve the best. I only trust the US Playing Card Company to meet this standard currently. As for other companies, they are still very new and are growing into their own shell. I have friends who work directly for them so obviously I have nothing against them. I just love the classic feel of USPCC cards. The quality difference between the USPCC and others can be detected with minimal effort to the card expert the moment your fingers touch the edges.
My wife and I did a card test where I was blindfolded and she gave me 6 different decks. It was my job to feel out which ones were which. In the mix were 2 other decks from different companies other than USPCC. Holly tested me and tried to trick me for about 15 minutes. I guessed it right every single time on which one was which. USPCC has a quality that is timeless. It feels natural in the hands. It faro shuffles perfectly and quickly. It breaks in easy. They retain their quality with use and they don’t clump up like some competitors might. The Air-Cushion finish and bicycle stock cards will stay slippery for a long time. When they start to lose that crispness after a crazy amount of use, just leave them on your desk for a couple weeks. Quality returns. This was one of the most important bullet points about the deck itself. Top notch quality.
Also, the card stock will be slightly thinner than the blue ones. More people have been wanting a thinner stock and although it would be nice to keep everything identical to the Blue Orbits for consistency, I believe in giving choices. If you want a thicker feel, get the blue ones, if you want the thinner feel, get the red ones. Finally, last time I requested the blades be new, sharpened, and fresh so the cut would be as clean as possible. Needless to say I’ll be doing it the same way again. Since my cards are not the most popular in the card community, I have to work harder to have them stand out above the rest. Quality, design, and customer service are the best ways to do this in my opinion.
One Way Design
Yes you read correctly, the Blue and Red Orbits have a one way back design. It’s not something I made a big deal about. I kept it pretty low key and didn’t even say anything about it until after the cards went on sale at theOrbitbrown.com. At a quick glance you can see if the card is facing upside or downside just by looking at the back design.
