– NOTE: During the Kickstarter, this was offered as a mystery box – there’s a 1 in 3 chance you would get a Gilded deck when you opened it. There was no way of knowing which was which. My listings are resale decks which are guaranteed to be Regular or Gilded. Meaning, if you get this deck and pick Regular, there is 100% chance it’s a Regular and 0% chance it’s going to be Gilded. If you pick Gilded, there is 100% it’s going to be Gilded. I don’t believe in surprises 🙂 Both are brand new, sealed in cellophane.

“Terrorize” is inspired by “the dark forest theory” first introduced in Liu Cixin’s award-winning novel, The Three-Body Problem. It led us to think about human survival and other lifeforms – the unknowability and implication of their existence.

– The visual is best described as Gothic: mysterious, antiquated, conspicuously dark… It was a natural decision to adopt this aesthetic. We’re attracted to its subtlety and narrative power, which artfully express the depth and charm of the terror of unknowing.

– In this deck, you’ll find the original illustrations of 12 creatures from 4 bodies of myths and two characters inspired by the Cthulhu Mythos. The greedy serpents, malicious sea monsters, cold-blooded undead, ruthless devils… Feel your heart sink in the dark forest… will you survive?

– Packaging: tuck box Cardstock: 300-GSM German black core paper Texture: embossed / air-cushioned Coloring: eco-friendly metallic ink with no pungent odor Production: printed by KingStar, fulfilled by Vermilion

– Each deck has either regular edges or gilded edges. There is a 33.33% chance you get a gilded version (222 gilded decks & 444 standard decks). The outer black plastic sleeves, fully sealed without indicating what type of deck is inside, are virtually mystery boxes. The inner paper tuck box has either a gold tear tape (gilded) or clear tear tape (non-gilded) so you can tell the difference without opening the seal for the tuck box.

– When illustrating the face cards, we looked to western mythologies for inspiration. We ended up depicting 12 mythical creatures from Norse, Greek, Egyptian, and religious mythos – each associated with a suit. Their mysterious, awe-inspiring origins, looks, and powers have haunted the human imagination for millennia. In retrospect, there may be no better subjects we could’ve used to charm and terrorize!

– ♠ ♠ ♠ SPADES – SERPENTS – NORSE MYTHOLOGY

♠ ♠ ♠ Norse mythology stemmed from Norse paganism; it was the basis of the religion of the Viking warriors who plundered Europe from the 8th to 11th centuries. Some famous deities include the hammer-wielding Thor; the one-eyed Odin; his powerful wife Frigg; the peace-bestowing Freyr; the trickster god Loki, etc. But some of the most fascinating characters in Norse mythology are not the gods or goddesses but the creatures that constantly defy them and terrorize people. This deck introduces the serpents – a spine-chilling race nestled in dark secrets.

– ♦ ♦ ♦ DIAMONDS – SEA MONSTERS – GREEK MYTHOLOGY

♦ ♦ ♦ Greek mythology concerns the world’s origin and nature as well as the Greeks’ own cults and rituals. A marvelous realm of legendary creatures and mythic humanoids occurs, among them are sea monsters who breed and thrive in the murky depths of oceans. Some look hideous and ominous; some are beautiful and seductive. In either case, when they come up from under a ship’s hull, and as the once calm water begins bubbling up with vengeance, fate is inescapable.

– ♣ ♣ ♣ CLUBS – MUMMIES – EGYPTIAN MYTHOLOGY

♣ ♣ ♣ The ancient Egyptians believed in resurrection and everlasting life: as long as “maat” (the order of the universe) was maintained, an afterlife could be achieved by preserving the body, furnishing the tomb, and providing everything needed for life in the afterworld. Mummification hence refers to the preservation of the body. In ancient Pyramid Texts, the cosmos fell into chaos with the demise of Osiris (the god of death). The gods’ tears turned into honey, resins, and incense used to mummify his body. This practice began in 2400 B.C., and for at least 400 years, it was believed that only pharaohs could attain immortality this way. The imagination surrounding mummies gives us a new way to think about time. What if the present is only a series of recurring patterns? What if present events are just repetitions of distant myths?

– ♥ ♥ ♥ HEARTS – DEVILS – RELIGIOUS MYTHOS

♥ ♥ ♥ It’s only meaningful to talk about devils with their origins being considered. Generally, a devil is a manifestation of evil; it objectifies some sort of hostile and destructive force. Devils can have varying names, natures, and attributes in different cultures and religions. We owe our depictions to Mesopotamian, Judaic, and Christian mythologies. – Finally, the big and little Jokers depict a treasure chest and a goblet possessed by demonic forces, respectively. The crawling tentacles pay homage to their source of inspiration, the Cthulhu Mythos.

– These brief intros are far away from capturing their mystique; but hopefully, they get you curious and become a starting point:)

– The cards are secured in a tuck box. We applied three techniques to make its design look more dynamic: embossing, UV screen printing, and gold stamping. Embossing creates a raised effect on the center image. The letters are printed with UV ink, an up-and-becoming choice for screen printing to obtain better color intensity and adhesion. It’s also environmentally conscious. Finally, some other decorative patterns are gold-stamped onto the box, so that even the smallest detail cannot be missed. All of these effects can be told with your eyes as well as your fingertips:)
